Come February, get ready for Mexico's Carnaval!
This fun and frivolous festival happens a week before Ash Wednesday, just before the onset of Lent. Here, you will see a fascinating mixture of Mexico's old culture (pre-Hispanic culture) and its “newer” Catholic tradition.
The festival is marked with pageantry, fiestas and general merriment. Locals and visitors alike can enjoy colorful floats on parade, variety shows with mimes, clowns and impersonators, concerts, balls, games and dances. The balls are exciting events in which the people get to choose the Carnaval king and queen in each city.
Visit the cities of Mazatlan, San Miguel de Allende and Veracruz, as these are more popular options when celebrating the Carnaval.
